What Is Acupuncture & How Can It Help You?

Acupuncture is a very captivating, knowledge-based, and wisdom-driven medicine. It has been around for 3-5,000 years. There has been - and continues to be - research conducted on acupuncture and its effectiveness. When dogs receive acupuncture, the effects and relief are immediate -- indicating that the results aren’t just a “placebo” effect. Further, anything that has been around for 3-5,000 years must have some serious sticking power and must be incredibly effective and impactful!

Acupuncture can help athletes with sprains, strains, muscular and joint issues, pain, injury, concussion, performance enhancement, improved recovery, recovery from surgery, sleep, mental resilience, digestion… the list goes on and on. And it can help many of these concerns all in the same treatment. The Acupuncturist can treat multiple body parts at once, the root and branch, along with constitutional concerns. The body is a massive and interwoven net, and when one aspect is treated, it inevitably will shift the net and treat other aspects synergistically. Just call it an advantageous side effect! An example of this phenomenon is treating a person for upper back and neck pain, along with a feeling of overwhelm and exhaustion and not only does their neck and back pain improve, but so does their mood, sleep, energy, and digestion. Talk about a lot of bang for your buck!

Have a health concern? Acupuncture can help with easy grace and tenderness. It treats the whole human (body, mind, and spirit), and the root, and branch of the concern. It restores balance and relief all while improving the condition and the patient’s quality of life.

Here are three health issues recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for which acupuncture can have a profound impact:

  1. Pain: This includes pain from any cause. Some of the more popularly treated conditions are trauma, headache, injury, overuse, sports, and pain related to muscles, joints, and soft tissue. Many people seek out acupuncture for neck and lower back pain, along with strains and sprains and insidious pain that other healthcare providers have not been able to effectively treat.

  2. Women’s Health: Many couples struggle with fertility. Acupuncture is a cost-effective, safe, holistic, and gentle way to treat the cause of infertility. The process is often successful, plus it is also nurturing to the body and the couple Rather than feeling completely depleted and fragile, the woman and couple will feel supported and resilient.

  3. Emotions/stress: Acupuncture balances the body and restores harmony. This is true for emotions as well as pain and the other bodily functions. In fact, emotions are an integral part of the TCM paradigm. Each organ in the body is associated with an emotion. When there is unrest with that organ’s energy, there will be unrest with the related emotion time and time again. When you correct the energy, you correct the emotion. In this situation, the imbalance causes an emotional reaction, but when functionality is resumed, the emotion will be steadied. This is also true vice versa. When one experiences an emotion, it has the potential to damage the organ’s energy, thankfully, acupuncture can harmonize and balance the emotion, so it doesn’t cause lasting harm.

There are a plethora of randomized controlled trials showing the effectiveness of acupuncture - we highlight several of our favorite studies on our website. All one must do is search Google Scholar or PubMed to find multiple studies on their topic in question. The World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) all recognize the efficacy of acupuncture, as does the Mayo Clinic. And if you want more proof than randomized control trials or public health institutions, just ask around. I am guessing that someone you are close to, or someone in the coffee shop with you has had acupuncture and has experienced the profound and positive effects of it.
